CJ Jones

Hi, I'm CJ Jones, assistant coach for the South Florida Blades Speed Team. It's 1990 and my daughter Anna came up to me and said, "Dad, I want to skate on the speed team at Skatetown." My immediate response was, "Sounds like a great idea." Little did I know that sixteen years later she would be finishing grad school and I would still be with the Blades.

I started out just watching practice. Then, I was putting pylons back in place when they got kicked. Next thing you know, I'm dust mopping the floor before practice. I added in the jobs of cheerleader, morale officer and head Bar-B-Que chef. To put it lightly, I was highly involved. My daughter and I had a wonderful time skating. Her speed skating career lasted ten years and every minute of it is a cherished memory for both of us.

Somewhere along about 1996 I started helping head coach, Harry Stuart. My duties were all of those above and coaching the Thursday practice. To begin with I was inept, but enthusiasm will usually conquer all. Over the years I've made it a point to keep my ears open and mouth shut when around speed coaches that are successful. Hopefully, I've learned a few things that I can pass along to my team. It gives me joy and great satisfaction to see young athletes persevere and succeed. In my book, trying with all your heart is winning. If by their own perseverance and effort, a skater wins a championship, it not only is a championship for them but also for the South Florida Blades and in a small way me.

Training

Train to win. Train to win because winning is better than losing. When I train to win I become smarter and stronger. When I become smarter and stronger than my opponent, I am winner.
